Was ist Open Innovation ?

Der Begriff Open Innovation (“offene Innovation”) bezeichnet die aktive Öffnung der Innovationsprozesse zur Aussenwelt.
Open Innovation ist ein Paradigma, welches externe Partner und Communities, also externe Ideen, in die Innovationsabläufe gezielt einbindet.

“Open innovation is a paradigm that assumes that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas, and internal and external paths to market, as the firms look to advance their technology”.

Open innovation is the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate internal innovation, and expand the markets for external use of innovation, respectively. This paradigm assumes that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas, and internal and external paths to market, as they look to advance their technology.

Unter “Open Innovation” werden meist Prozesse verstanden, bei denen kooperativ, durch Offenlegung von eigenem Wissen, Technologien (manchmal aber auch von Inhalten), Innovationen geschaffen werden. “Open Innovation” wird als Innovationsprozess definiert, in dem Wissen aus organisationsinternen Quellen zusammen mit jenem aus organisationsexternen zum Entwickeln einer Innovation verwendet wird. Studien belegen, dass für bestimmte Anwendungsfälle der “Open Innovation” Prozess (dt. offener Innovationsprozess) dem geschlossenen vorzuziehen ist, in dem die Entwicklung einer Innovation ausschließlich innerhalb einer Organisation (z.B. im Unternehmen) stattfindet. Die Offenheit eines OI-Prozesses wird daran gemessen, wieviel Wissen, Inhalte und Ressourcen der Organisation offengelegt werden und für wen diese offengelegt werden. Das Spektrum dieser Offenheit variiert dabei stark. Ein Beispiel für extrem offene Prozesse sind Entwicklungsprozesse der Free-Software Bewegung, in der die Bearbeitung einer gesamten Innovation meist offen geschieht und für jedermann zugänglich ist. Im Gegenzug können aber auch Prozesse als OI-Prozesse bezeichnet werden, bei denen nur begrenzt Inhalte oder Wissen offengelegt werden, wie z.B. Informationen zu Zwischenprodukten oder Prozessen.

Wie bei jedem Prozess kann auch der “Open Innovation” Prozess in Phasen eingeteilt werden, welche die Bearbeitung verschiedener Problemstellungen, Aspekte und Aufgaben als Ziel haben. Diese sind je nach konkreter Ausgestaltung des “Open Innovation” Prozesses unterschiedlich. Ein Beispiel dafür wäre ein Prozess, der aus den Phasen Ideensuche, Ideenentwicklung, Innovationsauswahl, Implementierung und Evaluierung besteht und in der Ideensuche und Evaluierung die Einbindung von Kunden und externen Partnern vorsieht.

Kunden, Partner und Mitglieder der verschiedenen beteiligten Organisationen können somit Bestandteile einer “Open Innovation” Community sein. Um die darin stattfindenden Abläufe, Prozesse, Interaktionen im Sinne dieser Strategie umsetzen zu können bedarf es geeigneter Komponenten, die einerseits diese abbilden und andererseits Dienste, welche die Communities unterstützen und dadurch deren Aktivitäten fördert.

Klassifikation von Open Innovation Projekten

In der Wissenschaft werden Open Innovation Projekte in der Regel zunächst einmal bezüglich der Richtung und Stärke der “Offenheit” aus Sicht des Projektinitianten klassifiziert. So unterscheidet man zwischen “Inbound”- und “Outboud”-Directions. Prinzipiell gibt es drei Klassen von Prozessen der Öffnung: den Outside-in Prozess, den Inside-out Prozess und den Coupled Prozess (Prof. Oliver Gassmann Universität St.Gallen).
